Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais shocked Hollywood by injecting humour and irreverance into what organisers hoped would be a sombre celebration of A-list self-importance.
The British comedian misunderstood his brief, poking fun at millionaires paid to dress up and pretend to be someone else.
His outrageous jokes implied that movie stars were ordinary people with foibles who should not be elevated to a position beyond the reach of parody and the taxman.
“Nothing could be further from the truth,” said Phillipo Berry, celebrity arse-spotter for Los Angeles-based showbiz magazine Cum!.
“These people are, like, total gods … literally in the case of 7th dan Scientology wizard Tom Cruise.”
Gervais disappeared for an hour in the middle of last night’s ceremony. He was reduced to a near-catatonic state after being forced to watch Robert De Niro’s latest movie, Little Fockers.
Organisers hoped that showing The Office creator the genius of mainstream Hollywood comedy – the repeated use of the syllable Fock, which sounds like a bit like ‘Fuck’ – would force him to tone down his act.
It wasn’t all bad news for Brits at the ceremony.
Colin Firth won best actor after breaking the mould of British leading men by playing an upperclass toff who struggles to get his words out in The King’s Speech.
