Hopes that 40 would remain the new 30 in 2012 were dashed today when the landmark milestone was reclassified by experts at women’s magazine Cosmopolitan.

In a short statement from the company’s features department, Cosmopolitan confirmed that 40 was now the new 50.

“Rather than being a time of new found life and vigour, our research now confirms that 40 has more in common with the steady decline in physical and mental faculties experienced by those in their fifties,” the statement read.

“To that end we must regretfully inform our readers that forty is now the new fifty.”

The announcement has come as a bitter blow to many women, particularly after industry insiders had predicted no change in 2012.

Angie Werbenstein, of Hello magazine, said: “Forty had been the new thirty since 1998 so perhaps a change was long overdue. But the worst women expected was that forty would remain steady at forty. To be the new fifty is devastating.”

Cosmopolitan declined to comment on rumours that 50 is to be the new 60 and 60 the new 70.

As the News Grind went to press, there were unconfirmed reports that 20 was to be reclassified as the new 35 by the end of the month. Seventy remains the new 60.
