The headwear of Colonel Gaddafi is a legitimate target for Nato air strikes, Defence Secretary Liam Fox insisted today while denying claims of a bid to assassinate the Libyan dictator.
The peak of his distinctive military titfer was hit by shrapnel after a bombing raid on Gaddafi’s compound in what the regime said was a failed attempt on the Libyan leader’s life.
US defence secretary Robert Gates insisted that the United Nations-backed coalition was “not targeting him [Gaddafi] specifically – just his hat”.
David Cameron sparked concern about mission creep today when he revealed the full list of what Nato considers ‘legitimate targets.’ These include not only Gaddafi’s hat, but also his slippers, pet dogs and a variety of the Libyan leader’s domestic appliances.
“We are not trying to assassinate Mr Gaddafi,” insisted the Prime Minister. “But are instead targeting elements that are considered ‘fair game’ in our bid to quell unnecessary violence in Libya.
“The United Nations Security Council has approved the targeting of Gaddafi’s hats, his pet chihuahuas and various household appliances, such as his microwave and kettle.
“Gaddafi has absolutely nothing to fear. If he wants to remain safe, he shouldn’t wear a hat, walk his dog or boil the kettle.”
As The News Grind went to press, the UN Security Council passed the British armed forces 127th ‘legitimate target’ request in 48 hours: Gaddafi’s moustache has now been declared a legitimate target for Nato air strikes.
