Tsunami-hit Japan is facing a new deadly threat from the sea, writes Nigel Eels.
For there is now every chance that Godzilla will attack the stricken mainland, wreaking havoc and destroying all in its path.
And as Japan’s nuclear plants go into meltdown it could result in the creation of an army of Godzillas – capable of wiping out every major city in the world.
The grim warning comes from Sunderland taxi driver Harold Winscale.
He said: “I was watching the unfolding drama on BBC News 24, and it suddenly struck me: hey – what about Godzilla? They haven’t come up with that scenario yet.
“Surely radioactive leaks from the country’s stricken power stations have provided the perfect conditions for hundreds of 200ft mutant dinosaurs to emerge from the Pacific Ocean intent on vengeance against mankind, just like in the fillums.
“I’d had a few drinks, so I contacted the BBC with my theory. I was expecting them to tell me to piss off – but to my surprise immediately invited me to the studios.
“Next thing I know Kate Silverton is giving me free rein to speculate about my frankly ludicrous hypothesis for the next thirty-six hours while an unchanging image of a power station was broadcast on screen.”
Mr Winscale – who admits he has no knowledge of the nuclear industry – subsequently appeared on Sky News, CNN and Al-Jazeera as the rolling news networks desperately filled in time.
A BBC spokesman told TNG: “When a major event like the Japanese tsunami occurs, there’s a hell of a lot of time to kill with not much happening at all.
“We appreciate that what Mr Winscale was saying was pure, ill-informed speculation, but it’s not as if anybody was watching.”
> The world record for speculation on BBC News 24 is held by Rochdale chip shop owner Florrie Palmer, who only last month last year talked for 4 days 21 hours about what Diana would have thought of Kate Middleton.
