Ghostly figure spotted on Wembley pitch

Thousands of fans viewing Tuesday’s match between England and Montenegro in HD claim to have spotted a ghostly presence on the pitch, writes Crispin Fisher.

Spooked supporters bombarded the switchboard at ITV claiming that an apparition wearing Wayne Rooney’s shirt kept running around the pitch, usually five or six feet away from the ball.

“There was this Frankenstein-type figure in an England shirt,” said Graham Hicks, a 28-year-old hospital porter from Reading.

“He could barely stand up and got nowhere near the ball. He looked almost human, but for his monstrous features.”

ITV bosses had thought the ghostly image was caused by a glitch in the cameras used for High Definition recording. But a number of fans at the ground also reported seeing the apparently out-of-sorts ghoul.

Several England players appear to have been effected by the ghost as they frequently looked to pass to the semi-visible figure.

Fabio Capello even said the ghost had a ‘normal’ game, after mistaking him for an actual England player.

Reports that the same spooky figure was seen hanging around Kings Cross station after midnight are said to be wide of the mark.
