The annual Wesley Sneijder lookalike convention has been put back to the summer after complaints from irate Manchester United fans.
The national event sees hundreds of Sneijder lookalikes descend on Manchester to celebrate their uncanny resemblance to Inter Milan’s Dutch international.
But the sight of Sneijder lookalikes arriving at Manchester Airport and booking into city-centre hotels has caused untold misery to the Red Devils supporters and local sports journalists.
“Every day we’re getting calls from punters claiming to have seen Sneijder booking into a Premier Inn, buying a McDonald’s or jumping into a taxi in Salford,” said Manchester Evening News sports editor Peter Spencer. “It’s a huge pain in the backside to be honest.”
The postponement of the Sneijder convention is the latest in a number of famous footballer lookalike events up and down the country to be scrapped during the January transfer window.
The regular I’m Darren Bent gathering in Liverpool and the North London David Beckham Double convention near Tottenham are the latest to be put on hold to defuse tension among supporters.
